Violent night in Newburgh leaves 1 dead, 3 hurt
NEWBURGH — Four violent attacks in the City of Newburgh Thursday night into Friday morning left one man dead and three other people injured.
Police were called to 23 Farrington Street around 10:08 p.m. and found Jerome Scarlett, of 143 Johnston Street in Newburgh, face down in a gravel driveway. He had been shot once in the torso.
Scarlett was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Earlier in the evening, at 9:58 p.m., a 19-year-old Newburgh man was shot in the right knee while at 93 Fullerton Avenue. The victim told police he was with several friends sitting on a porch when three men approached them, all wearing masks, and each armed with a handgun.
All three suspects began to hit him and told him to give them money and jewelry. One witness tried to push the suspects off the porch and the others ran inside.
The victim told the suspects he had nothing to give them at which point one shot him. The suspects then fled on foot down Fullerton Avenue toward First Street.
The victim was taken to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital.
One minute later police were called to a serious assault at 250 Washington Street where officers found a 42-year-old Newburgh man who had been severely beaten about the face and head. He told police he was walking on Washington Street when he was attacked by two other men. He sustained lacerations on his head, face, hands and right ear. He was also taken to the hospital.
And at 3:52 a.m. Friday, a police officer was flagged down in the area of Broadway and Robinson Avenue by a man who had just been beaten and robbed by a group of 10 to 15 men.
The victim, a 25-year-old Newburgh man, had just left a bar at 362 Broadway when the men ran up behind him and began to kick and punch him. Several suspects went through his pants pockets and stole his cell phone and $90 in cash as others continued to beat him. Continued...
It is not believed that any of the attacks are related, police said.
Anyone with information regarding any of those crimes is asked to call Lt. Det. Patrick Arnold at 845-569-7508 or the main number at 845-561-3131. All calls will be kept strictly confidential.
