LETTER: Freedom of Information laws offer important tool

Dear Editor:

It’s great that you guys/gals don’t back down so readily when people (like those in New Paltz) throw you roadblocks.

Your editorial (Feb. 14) is helpful because it tells readers they do have rights. All too often, officials act as if those they represent are uninformed and should have no say.

If anything, write more about what people’s rights are under Freedom of Information laws and about the obligations of public officials to satisfy a request without stalling or intimidation.

I think this is one of the few tools left that taxpayers are unaware they can use effectively.
