Kingston girls basketball season ends in Section 9 tournament
KINGSTON — A quest for an eighth consecutive appearance in the Section 9, Class AA girls basketball tournament for Kingston High was dashed by Valley Central Monday night as the Vikings knocked the Tigers out of the postseason with a resounding 54-40 quarterfinal victory at Kate Walton Field House.
Haliann Fitzgerald scored 18 points and Alyssa Leahy had 11 to pace Valley Central, which advances to Thursday’s semifinal at top-seeded Monroe-Woodbury.
Sarah Galloway had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Marley McCabe came off the bench for 10 points to lead the Tigers, who finished with an 11-8 record.
“I didn’t see this one coming,” said Kingston coach Steve Garner.
The Tigers rallied from a 11-point second-quarter deficit to tie midway through the third.
Valley Central regained control with the final four points of the quarter to break a 31-31 deadlock and went on to outscore Kingston 19-9 in the fourth quarter.
