School building improvement options topic of New Paltz meeting
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. — School district trustees will meet Wednesday to discuss health and safety issues that could be addressed as a bond proposition.
The session is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the high school on South Putt Corners Road.
“There was quite a large (meeting) with the architects and construction managers to basically understand the things that we need to do, the things that we’re calling health and safety,” board President Patrick Rausch said.
The session is expected to include information on when a proposition would be presented for a public vote.
“We kind of have a list of those things ... a proposed schedule, which gives a time line of what we would do to get this in front of the public,” he said.
Cost information has been discussed at several recent meetings during the past two months, with a Priority 1 list showing $12.49 million in projects and a Priority 2 list containing $13.99 million in work.
Rausch during a board meeting last month said officials are concerned that a proposition with too much work will not be received well by the public.
“We think $12 million is too much,” he said. “The public, when we had our little community forum (in November), they kind of said we understand you’ve got some immediate health and safety (needs), times are tight, please just kind of come in with a small amount and dose it to us over a few years. Don’t try to come in with a big, huge bond that’s going to try to solve the problem right off the bat.”
Wednesday’s meeting will include a review of information gathered from a survey seeking to determine priorities district residents consider important.
Projects being considered by the board include work at Duzine and Lenape elementary schools, and the middle and high schools.
