New Paltz school trustees list capital project options
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. — School board trustees will meet Wednesday to discuss whether a proposition for health and safety improvements at district schools should be put on the district election ballot in May, and, if so, how much district voters should be asked to approve.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at New Paltz High School on South Putt Corners Road.
Options being considered include a $12.29 million proposition that would take care of “priority” needs; a $9.49 million plan to address “immediate” needs; a $7.54 million proposal to address safety-related and “end-of-life” building needs; and a $4.84 million plan strictly limited to safety needs.
At a meeting last week, Board of Education President Patrick Rausch said the board is trying to develop a sequence of projects for future ballots.
“Part of what we’re looking for ... is a prioritization of these things, not with the idea that the second option means we’re going to take everything off the list, but what do we need to do year 1, what can we do year 2, what can we do year 3?” he said.
Work being considered includes the following:
• Duzine Elementary School: electrical upgrades, replacement of emergency and exit lighting, boiler controls, water heater, water pipes and valves, and gym ventilation system; and fire and smoke alarm improvements.
• Lenape Elementary School: New boiler controls, heating and ventilation system upgrades, masonry and window repairs, and replacement of air compressor controls, roofing, water heating, fire and smoke detection systems and library cooling system.
• New Paltz Middle School: New wall supports, replacement of roofing and gutters, ventilation system, pipe insulation, and ventilation and boiler controls; water heating, fire suppression and electrical system upgrades; and additional emergency and exit lighting.
• New Paltz High School: cooling and ventilation system, boiler piping and fire alarm system upgrades; replacement of emergency and exit lighting, roofing, boiler; chimney and window repairs; and replacement of duct work for environmental distribution systems.
