Levon Helm to be buried in Woodstock, next to Rick Danko
WOODSTOCK, N.Y. — Levon Helm will be buried Friday in the Woodstock Cemetery, next to Rick Danko, a fellow member of The Band who died in 1999, according to The Associated Press.
Helm, 71, died last Thursday after a lengthy battle with cancer.
A public wake for Helm is being held today at his home in Woodstock, where he held “Midnight Ramble” concerts on Saturdays in recent years.
A private funeral is to be held Friday.
Helm, Danko, Garth Hudson, Robbie Robertson and Richard Manuel’s first album as The Band was 1968’s “Music From Big Pink,” recorded in a pink house in West Saugerties.
Manuel died in 1986.
The Band’s well-known songs include “The Weight,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and “Up on Cripple Creek.”
The Band has been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Helm — a drummer, singer and mandolin player — is a four-time Grammy Award winner.
