Ulster County Executive Michael Hein orders flags flown at half-staff in memory of war veteran
KINGSTON, N.Y. — Ulster County Executive Michael Hein has ordered flags at all county buildings to be flown at half-staff today in memory of Alphonso Sellet, an Ulster County resident who was a decorated military veteran.
Sellet, a former superintendent of the Ulster County Office Building, died on April 17 at age 91.
Sellet served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War and in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor for his distinguished actions during World War II at the Ludendorf Bridge in Ramagen, Germany. He also was awarded a Presidential Citation and eight Battle Stars.
Additionally, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal with Clasp, the American Defense Service Ribbon, American Theater Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon.
Sellet was instrumental in the creation of Vietnam Veterans Day being proclaimed on March 29, 1974, and was present at the proclamation signing by President Richard Nixon.
