As HealthAlliance struggles, St. Luke's group is growing
NEWBURGH, N.Y. — As HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley considers closing either Kingston or Benedictine hospital, another area hospital group is growing,
St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, with campuses in Newburgh and Cornwall, as well as facilities in Fishkill and New Paltz, is planning to open another in Monroe late this year.
At the St. Luke’s annual breakfast on Friday, hospital President Allan Atzrott said the hospital is committed to a new standard of making do with less.
He also announced a new partnership with Wingate Healthcare to expand long-term care services at the John-Holden Home in Newburgh, which will include a new 60-bed dementia unit.
Atzrott told the community and business leaders that this is a new age of medicine and of practicing physicians, like Dr. Jeffrey Degen.
“Jeff’s a neurosurgeon, 39 years old, four years older than my oldest daughter,” Atzrott said. “Our kids are providing the care, but the incredible training and what he brings to the table relative to insight is where it’s all at. It’s the next generation of physicians.”
Atzrott also addressed state and national healthcare reform and how it impacts St. Luke’s.
“Healthcare reform impacts the cost, quality and access of care, making the standard ‘do with less,’” he said. “However, we have a commitment to our community, and that commitment is to provide quality healthcare under any and all circumstances.”
