Exec says possible hospital closing 'courageous,' harbinger of things to come

KINGSTON, N.Y. – The president of the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association says the possible closing of a Kingston hospital is a "courageous" step and a harbinger of things to come.

Officials of HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley confirmed Friday they are considering closing either the Kingston or Benedictine hospital as an economy move.

Kevin Dahill said it is an appropriate move given the state of hospital systems in general.

“We are in an environment in which our hospitals are really required to take as much cost out of their system as they can and I think that they had to make a decision there about the overhead of running two facilities,” Dahill said. “I think you are going to see more of this throughout the region and I applaud their efforts to do this. It’s a very courageous thing.”
