Speed 2: Another zooming biker nabbed on Thruway
ROSENDALE, N.Y. — In the second such case in less than a month, a 28-year-old Dutchess County man was arrested after the motorcycle he was driving on the Thruway was clocked at up to 193 mph, state police said on Thursday.
Anthony J. Anderson of Poughkeepsie first was spotted Wednesday evening in the Albany County town of Coeymans, in rainy conditions, police said. They said Anderson, who was southbound, eventually was stopped without incident by troopers on the Thruway in Rosendale and that he told them he was on his way to visit a patient in a Poughkeepsie-area hospital.
Anderson was issued 14 traffic tickets, including one charging him with traveling 193 mph in a 65-mph zone and another charging him with reckless driving, a misdemeanor.
Anderson was arraigned in Saugerties Town Court and sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $1,500 bail, police said. On Thursday morning, however, an officer at the jail said Anderson no longer was in custody.
State police Sgt. William Lovely said Anderson was seen driving a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle at 193 mph at 7:49 p.m. Troopers tried to pursue Anderson, but could not keep up, Lovely said.
Once Anderson was in custody, three separate troopers ticketed him based on the infractions each one had seen, Lovely said. He said one trooper issued Anderson five tickets for infractions in the Greene County town of Catskill, while two others issued tickets for infractions in Ulster County.
Anderson’s arrest came exactly four weeks after motorcyclist Nikkolaus McCarthy, 25, of Charlton, Saratoga County, was arrested after being clocked at 170 mph on the Thruway between Albany and New Paltz. McCarthy pleaded guilty on May 23 in Ravena Town Court to reckless driving and had his license suspended for 90 days. He also was sentenced to the 20 days he’d already spent in the Albany County Jail.
