SAUGERTIES, N.Y.  – Police are continuing their investigation into what they have determined to be an accidental fall from the roof of a Main Street building that claimed the life of a 27-year-old Saugerties man early Sunday morning.

Donald E. Briggs fell from the roof of 265 Main St. onto the municipal parking lot below, according to Lt. Richard Mazzone of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at state police Ulster. He died from his injuries at the scene, Mazzone said.

On Sunday at about 6:08 a.m., Mazzone said, Ulster County 911 received a report of an unresponsive person in the parking lot of the Main Street building near Computer Guys.

Late Sunday evening, Mazzone said investigators believe Briggs was socializing on the roof at the time of the incident, but the investigation is continuing.

He declined to comment on whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

Mazzone said investigators found no signs of a struggle or apparent foul play.

“All information investigators obtained points to an accidental death,” Mazzone said.

Briggs was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ulster County Medical Examiner, he said.

An autopsy is scheduled, possibly on Monday.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call state police at (845) 338-1702. Continued...

Saugerties police and the Ulster County Sheriff's office assisted in the investigation.
