Explosion will be part of fireworks safety event in Kingston

Saturday, June 30, 2012

KINGSTON, N.Y. — The state police Arms Disposal Unit will detonate an explosive at 11 a.m. Monday morning at the Ulster County Law Enforcement Center to highlight the dangers of fireworks.

A U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission study found 65 percent of all fireworks injuries in 2011 were sustained during the 30 days surrounding the Independence Day holiday, according to the Ulster County Executive’s Office. More than half of the injuries were the result of unexpected ignition of the device or consumers not using fireworks as intended.

Fireworks injuries most often resulted in burns to the hands and head, including the eyes, face and ears.

County Executive Michael Hein said he is hosting Monday’s event to warn residents about the dangers of fireworks and encourage county residents and visitors to enjoy free public fireworks displays hosted by a number of municipalities in the area.
